My Father is Dying

...or so I surmise from the phone message I got last night. I'm going to see if I can track him down today. Not physically, as he's up in the New York area, but I'm hoping to call him, and maybe one more time sing him this song, that I wrote for him back in 1988. I couldn't remember all of the lyrics, and it appears that I've never typed this one into a computer before, so I had to dig through a bunch of paper journals just to find it. As it turns out, the only lyrics I couldn't remember were the fourth and fifth verses, which aren't really about my dad anyway, although they were written so that you could also read them that way. Anyway, some of the lyrics take on a new shade of meaning in the current context.

Wait and See

Now when I was just a young lad,
my daddy made things with wood
And I used to love to watch him,
and to help him, if I could.

And I used to always ask him,
"Daddy, why is it done this way?"
He would pause to wipe his forehead,
and then he would always say:

"Wait and see, wait and see...
This is not the way that things
are always gonna be.
You've got to plan your work,
And work your plan;
After that, you do what you can."

Now my daddy, he was a preacher
But he'd rarely preach to me
'Cause when I went wrong, he'd simply ask:
"Is this the way you want it to be?"

"Wait and see, wait and see...
This is not the way that things
are always gonna be.
Now you can make your own rules,
but there's a price that you pay,
So make sure you want it that way!"

On my birthday, my daddy called me,
"I've got a question for you, my boy;
'Cause I've asked a dozen preachers,
But not one told me the meaning of joy."

Oh my daddy, I know an answer;
But it's not in words, you see.
So I'll teach you by example
Through this lesson you taught me!

"Wait and see, wait and see
This is not the way that things
are always gonna be!
You can't plan to laugh,
but you can laugh at the plan,
Oh, Daddy, I know that you can.

Now some people wait for someone
to come in and save the day.
Others dream of fame and fortune
And they swear they'll be happy... some day.

But there's something I should tell you.
You see, the world doesn't work that way.
Because you can see your whole future in
the life you're living today!

Wait and see, wait and see
This is not the way that things
are always gonna be.
You can't plan your life, or live a plan
Just keep the faith and say, "I can!"

Now I know that you were searching
for the dream to end all dreams
And this time you've learned the hard way
It's not always what it seems

And we used to dance together
But now I dance for you
And you know, I miss it sometimes
That crazy dance we used to do.

Wait and see, wait and see
Don't hold on to the way
you think we should be
Can't plan the love, or love a plan
But if you want me, here I am.

Wait and see, wait and see
Don't hold on to the way
you think we should be
Can't plan to love, or love a plan
But if you need me, I'm your man.

Wait and see...

[repeat chorus and fade out]
